He served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs from 14 March 2018 to 4 June 2021 under prime minister KP Sharma Oli. He is a central committee member of the Communist Party of Nepal . He currently serves as the Member of Parliament from Gulmi–1, having been elected in the 2017 general election with a majority of over 7,000 votes. He previously served as the member of parliament from Gulmi–2 from 1999 to 2013. Gyawali also served as the Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation from May 2006 to April 2007 under prime minister Girija Prasad Koirala.
